Future Revolution Round 2


Event Date: 12/13 April 2008

A total of 69 talented young cyclists from Great Britain, Holland, France and Greece put on a fantastic display of racing in the Second Future Revolution Track Meeting last weekend on the boards of Newport Velodrome.

In association with DHL, the Future Revolution hosted an awesome line up of young talent including two current World Junior Champions - Thierry Jollet of France - the World Individual Sprint Champion and England's Peter Mitchell who was part of the winning GB Team Sprint Team in Mexico last summer. In addition, riding for the England Junior Team was Jess Varnish (Junior European Keirin Champion) who was back in action having experienced her first senior World Championships in Manchester only a few weeks earlier. In addition to a team of six sprinters from France, there were some extremely hot competition from the remaining teams of Holland, Greece, England, Scotland, Wales and NI (Ulster)

An exciting programme of racing was provided for the young bike riders including Match Sprinting, Team Sprints, Madison, Derny Racing and much more and this was rewarded in full with a spectacular display of skills and speed shown by the stars of tomorrow. The French lads were awesome, dominating the men's sprint events and providing one of the highlights of the weekend when they recorded an amazing 56.919 to easily win the Madison Kilo TT. The Dutch are always at home in the Madison and once again demonstrated their class by winning the men's events on both days. And the GB didn't do too badly either! Representing their home countries the youngsters bagged a number of wins between them including all four derny races and both Girls' Madison events - and provided another highlight of the weekend when Jess Varnish (England) paired up with Becky James (Wales) to win the Female Team Sprint beating the French in a magnificent time of 34.98 seconds - a truly World Class time!

In addition to the World Class action provided by the top junior and youth riders, a number of youngsters from the DHL Sprint School were in action on Saturday evening competing in Keirin's (derny led races) and Team Sprints adding to the excitement of the event with some great racing and once again demonstrating how successful the Sprint School has become in assisting the development of these young, Future Stars!
